Electric vs. Gasoline Could this be the end of the traditional gasoline engine?

Elon Musk’s Tesla roadster 2 does 0-60 in 1.9 seconds and blazes through the quarter mile at an astonishing 8.8 seconds. Faster than any production car ever made, including the recently released Dodge Demon. This Roadster can travel over 600 miles on a single charge and uses regenerative braking to recharge the battery while making you’re daily commute. This begs the question; can a gasoline engine get any better? And if it can should it? The Tesla model X, Jaguar I-Pace, Audi E-Tron, and Rivian’s new R1S all have a couple things in common. They can all shoot to 60mph from a stop in less than 4.5 seconds, with some of them doing it as fast as 2.8 seconds. They also all have a range of 200+ miles and the Rivian has an impressive 400+ mile range. With these all electric SUV’s putting up specs as impressive as this, it’s starting to look like gasoline just won’t cut it. Not only can the all-electric vehicles perform just as good if not better than high class sports cars, they do it all without an exhaust pipe. That would lead a lot of consumers to believe they’re eco-friendly but are they really? A recent study by Jonathan Lesser; found in his article Are Electric Cars Worse for the Environment? Shows a worrying prediction. If consumers continue to buy and charge all electric vehicles, the energy consumption could be more harmful to the environment then even gas powered vehicles. The issue with these electric cars isn’t the car itself but instead it’s were the charge for the battery is coming from. As long as we still use natural gases and non-renewable resources as our source of electricity, charging an all-electric vehicle will use up more of those resources than even fuel injected engines. Companies like Mazda are coming out with engines so efficient and clean it leaves very little negative impact on the environment. For example Mazda claims their new Skyactive-3 engine will have a thermal efficiency rating of 56% which is just as good as most electric vehicles. Will the gasoline engine become so advanced it can be just as good as electric? Well that relies on a lot of factors, if we can find a clean way to charge these vehicles then gasoline engines won’t stand a chance compared to electric ones. It will take tedious amounts of research, testing, and time to […]

Boles motorsports is a personal blog created for the purpose of sharing unique experiences that have to do with car culture. My entire life I have been obsessed with the automotive industry. Its never ending, there’s thousands of automobile company’s and within said companies, millions of cars. I believe a vehicle is much more than just a form of transportation and plenty of others could say the same. It serves as an accessory, toy, learning experience and much more. I’ve always been fascinated with how much knowledge the automobile industry has to offer. Ever since I was a kid my dad would make me watch him change the brakes or the oil so I could learn to one day do it myself. Little did he know that would just be the spark for my burning desire to learn everything there is to learn from maintenance all the way to a full on 1000hp build. I hope I can share this desire to learn and hopefully even teach a few willing learners along the way. Stay tuned and don’t miss out!!                 ~Site Admin, Jeremiah
